What is a DXF file, exactly?

DXF — Drawing Exchange Format — was created by Autodesk in the 1980s so that CAD drawings could be shared between different software applications. Unlike a PDF, which flattens a drawing into pixels, a DXF file stores every line, arc and annotation as a precise mathematical object. That means you can zoom in infinitely without losing quality, take exact measurements, and modify individual elements.

DXF is the de facto standard for exchanging 2D technical drawings. Architects use it, engineers use it, and it's the format CNC machines and laser cutters commonly accept.

What can you actually change in a DXF file?

A DXF file is made up of drawing entities organised into layers. You can edit:

• Geometry — move, resize, delete or add lines, arcs, circles, polylines and splines
• Text and annotations — edit labels, change fonts, update dimension values
• Layers — rename layers, change their colour or line type, hide or lock them
• Hatch fills — change patterns, scale or replace solid filled areas
• Blocks — insert, move or delete reusable symbols and components

How to edit a DXF file using Edit DXF

   Open the editor — go to editdxf.com. No account or download needed.

   Open your file — click the folder icon in the toolbar, or drag and drop a .dxf file onto the canvas.

   Navigate the drawing — scroll to zoom, hold the middle mouse button or right-click to pan. The layer panel on the left lets you toggle visibility.

   Select and edit — click any element to select it. Drag to move it, use the handles to resize, or press Delete to remove it. Double-click text to edit it in place.

   Add new geometry — use the Draw tab in the ribbon to pick a tool. Line, Circle, Arc, Polyline and more are all available. Press Escape or Space to cancel a tool.

   Save your file — File → Save As → DXF. The file downloads to your computer, ready to open in AutoCAD, LibreCAD, or send to a CNC operator.
